CMU and DA-10 launch hybrid rice derby and techno demo farm

In support to DA’s Plant, Plant, Plant Program or AhonLahat, PagkaingSapat (ALPAS) laban sa COVID-19 program, the CMU administration together with the Department of Agriculture Region X, and nine seed companies launched the 50 hectares hybrid rice derby and technology demonstration in Musuan, Maramag Bukidnon last May 26, 2020.

This program aims to enhance rice productivity, availability, accessibility, and affordability amidst the threat of COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Regional Executive Director Carlene C. Collado, this rice resiliency project aimed at producing more rice to increase the national sufficiency level from 87% percent to 93 %.

“In Region 10, we aim for 94% rice sufficiency level, a 12 %increase target with the various mitigating programs implemented by DA-10 to boost rice production,’ Collado said.

Further, Collado said that the project aims to convince farmers to plant hybrid rice by showcasing the best farming technologies and practices through the collective efforts of the government, academe, LGU, and private sectors.

CMU supports this program under the memorandum of agreement through the utilization of the 50 hectares rice fields.

University President Jesus Antonio G. Derije welcomed the project positively and shared his coined meaning of the word COVID. He said COVID should stand for Commitment, Opportunity, Victory/ Values, Integrity/ Intervention, and D for Dedication.

“While everyone is worrying about COVID, we are here busy in land preparation to ensure rice productivity. We are one with DA in achieving food sufficiency in the province. I hope the seed companies would really support us,” Pres. Derije said.

The project covers a total of 50 hectares, giving each seed company five hectares to be planted with their most leading varieties, using their own cultural practices and protocol and the remaining five hectares will be utilized for the one common protocol for all cultural practices which will be adopted to all entry of varieties.

Meanwhile, the Techno Demo area will showcase the best farming practices that farmer can feasibly adopt to increase efficiency and productivity. It will also demonstrate the effect of various planting approaches (mechanical, manual, and direct seeding) to yield using top hybrid rice varieties provided by the participating companies.

In terms of Logistic support, DA-10 will be responsible for machinery and equipment in collaboration with Julimon’s Machinery. At the same time, seed companies will provide the seeds, fertilizers and labor in each farming activities, including technical assistance. CMU will handle the land preparation and other activities in the demo area, ready for planting.
