Rodeo sa Musuan draws Mindanao-wide participants

It was organized by the Society for the Advancement of Animal Science (SAAS) together with their advisers Dr. Maria Luz Soriano, faculty, Animal Science department; and Dr. Jose Alexander Abella, faculty, College of Veterinary Medicine.

This year’s 43^rd Rodeo sa Musuan is themed: “Continuing the tradition, showing and making the people understand the true meaning of rodeo.”

The society aimed at promoting rodeo sport appreciation by the audience though the different event. It also aimed at providing additional attraction to the university’s unified foundation.

Mr. Davenson Rey, SAAS president, said that annually the society conducts a rodeo festival intended for the teams within and outside the university.

“This is done purposely to foster ties among students involved in animal handling/raising as well as improving handling skills and techniques,” he said.

Aside from students, alumni also gathered to watch the rodeo festival.

According to Dr. Abram Roteo T. Pepito, alumnus and rodeo enthusiast,  this year’s rodeo festival is “okay” unlike before where cattle event [considered as the major event] was showcased on the second day.

He added that the program flow is fast-pacing and smooth-sailing. Pepito said that aside from it’s fun to watch, rodeo also features the techniques in proper handling of cows.

Another alumnus, Mr. Neil Anthony Dalangan, said he watched rodeo because he was also one of the players before.

Moreover, Rey, also a 4th year Animal Science student said that the alumni played an important role by acting as referees and judges during the rodeo event.  “Some of them became sponsors especially those working in big companies,” he added.

Every unified foundation and alumni homecoming celebration, rodeo has become the SAAS’ tradition to get acquainted with both the students and alumni. (IADalipe-Neri)
