LOOK: The CMU Physics Department is deeply honored to host the very first public lecture in the Philippines by Special Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics Laureate 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗹𝗹!

One of the most influential physicists in the world, Dame Bell Burnell, discovered radio pulsars when she was a Ph.D. student at the University of Cambridge. Her discovery and research led to her Ph.D. advisor’s Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974. In 2018, she was awarded the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for her work on pulsars and her leadership in physics. She donated the prize to help under-represented groups become physicists. She was the first-ever female president of the Institute of Physics, president of the Royal Astronomical Society, and is currently the Professorial Fellow in Physics at the University of Oxford.

To add to her long list of achievements, she has also been given the titles Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and Dame (DBE). The Department invites all STEM and physics students to join the Physics Meetup session on November 3, Thursday, from 5:30-7:00 PM (PhST). The session will be moderated by the Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2017 Winner and physics student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ms. Hillary Diane Andales.
