CEBREM in a nutshell

The CEBREM building was established from the funds of the Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR)

The Center for Biodiversity Research and Extension in Mindanao (CEBREM) was established to protect and conserve the remaining biodiversity in Mindanao through research, training, education and community involvement. CEBREM is an integral part of Central Mindanao University (CMU) whose vision and mission call for environmental consciousness for a sustainable environment and a humane society.

The CMU Board of regents through Resolution No. 103, s 2011 institutionalized CEBREM on November 17, 2011. CEBREM is composed of six units: Biodiversity Research Unit (BRU), Biodiversity Education and Training Unit (BETU), Biodiversity Laboratories and Facilities Unit (BLFU), Biodiversity Extension and Public Awareness Unit (BEPAU), University Museum and the Mt. Musuan Zoological and Botanical Garden (MMZBG).

A grant from the Department of Agriculture- Bureau of Agriculture Research (DA-BAR) financed the construction of the CEBREM Building which houses the equipment for biodiversity research and extension activities and research laboratories as well as serve as venue for the training of different stakeholders.

Dr. Victor B. Amoroso was the first director of this center who proposed and implemented several researches on biodiversity regarding different mountain ecosystems in Mindanao. Through the passionate & indefatigable endeavors of Dr. Amoroso, the research expanded to cover the socio-economic aspects of the various stakeholders living in the vicinities of the mountain forest lands. His research interest also expanded on the conservation of economic and threatened taxa and even to the development of biopesticide products.

Today, Dr. Amoroso, heads externally-funded researches and enjoys being a DOST scientist, the first Professor Emeritus of CMU and the only NAST Academician from Mindanao, Philippines.

As Central Mindanao University continues to work for academic excellence, this center should be an agent to attain the lofty vision and mission to promote environmental awareness for a sustainable environment through the protection and conservation of biodiversity in Mindanao.

    1. conduct research on biodiversity;
    2. spearhead in proposal preparation and assist in fund sourcing for biodiversity and conservation researches in Mindanao;
    3. enhance understanding on the importance of biodiversity through the production of communication, education and public awareness (CEPA) materials and conduct of seminar-workshops;
    4. train and develop personnel of SUC’s, GO’s, NGO’s, local people and other organizations on the conduct of research, conservation and the sustainable use of biodiversity;
    5. provide computerized database on species and ecosystem diversity;
    6. establish linkage and collaborate with international, national, and local institutions concerned with long-term ecological and biodiversity studies;
    7. upgrade and manage a Zoological and Botanical Garden, Natural History Museum and Natural Science Research Center for biodiversity studies and for public education and awareness; and
    8. recommend policy measures regarding the conservation and protection of
