Nursing

Central Mindanao University College of Nursing was established in June 2005 as approved per Board of Regents (BOR) Resolution No. 08, s. 2005 last February 11, 2005. This was initiated through the efforts of Dr. Emmanuel Lariosa, Dr. Nerissa A. Macarayan, Dr. Naluin G. Esdrelon, Dr. Nenita I. Prado; and, Prof. Lucy B. Ledres, with the support of Dr. Mardonio M. Lao. The College of Nursing was coalesced with the College of Home Economics. Dr. Nerissa A. Macarayan stood as the Dean in the fused colleges while Ms. Melanie L. Pahuyo, served as the first clinical Instructor. There were 52 pioneering freshmen BS Nursing students on its first year of operations.

In April of the following year (2006), Prof. Virginia M. Gimena was hired as the new Dean in the College of Nursing which was then striving to be on independent unit. However, the leadership of Prof. Gimena was short-lived since Prof. Risa V. Barrita took over the deanship of the College of Nursing. In 2007, CON once again faced another important milestone, a building in front of the University Hospital was used to cater the nursing faculty and students as a separate college.

Bukidnon Provincial Medical Center (formerly Bukidnon Provincial Hospital – Malaybalay), Bukidnon Provincial Hospital – Maramag, and St. Joseph Southern Bukidnon Hospital, Maramag were the pioneering clinical institutions affiliated with CON while Happy Home Inc, Maramag was its first psychiatric nursing affiliating institution.

In April 2009 marked the first graduation of the 23 pioneering students of the College of Nursing. In the same year all the 23 graduates took and passed the 2009 Nurse Licensure Exam. CMU had a 100% passing rate on its first grilling to the NLE. Since then, the CMU College of Nursing has been acknowledged as one of the top performing nursing institutions given their consecutive exemplary performances in the NLE.

In July 2009, Prof. Ellen Gay S. Intong was designated as the Dean of the college and in September 4 of the same year, the College of Nursing new building has been inaugurated and at the same time the BSN program was granted Level I accredited status by AACCUP.

The college continued to excel in nursing education and was ranked 13 th among the 16 top performing schools in nursing nationwide and ranked 1st in Region 10 based on Nurse Licensure Examination ratings from 2008 to 2012.

In 2014, Dean Pilar V. Domagsang was designated and initiated the offering of Health Care Services NC II as approved per BOR Resolution No. 25, s. 2015 and was certified by TESDA with Certificate of TVET Program Registration No. 201610012051. The offering of this special course was initiated by the Dean together with the 3 other faculty who were certified as the National TVET Trainers/Assessors last January 2015. In November 2016, the BSN Program was then granted as Level II accredited status by AACCUP.

In 2017, Ms. Princess Kenya Capacio was the first top notcher among the graduates who ranked 3rd place in November 2017 Nurse Licensure Exam. To sustain quality education, the nursing program was evaluated in the same year and was granted a Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) later in 2020.

In view of the first international collaboration and linkage, eight (8) senior students of Batch Les Reveurs were sent to Universitas Indonesia Fakultas Ilmu Keperawatan (University of Indonesia Faculty of Nursing) in Depok, Indonesia for educational exchange program in November 2018. In the same year, another international collaboration was initiated with Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, Baltimore, USA.

As time changes, the demand for nurses increases during the global pandemic brought about by Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19 Disease). This has greatly affected the delivery of instruction. Hence, CHED enjoined HEI’s to shift to flexible learning which was facilitated and implemented through the designated Dean, Theresa Linda N. Painagan along with the faculty and staff to ensure continuity of learning.

Amidst the global pandemic, the college continued to exert efforts to maintain quality education through accreditation. In November 2020, the BSN program was granted Level III AACCUP-accredited. To ensure program outcomes are met, the designated Dean, Dr. Richard Allan R. Soliven in coordination with the university administration, applied for the conduct of limited face-to-face class and clinical practicum and was issued the authority to implement by CHED in October 2021. The college was the first unit in the university to implement the limited face-to-face classes through the concerted efforts of the administration, faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders.

Through the years, the College of Nursing of Central Mindanao University have stood through the challenges of time. It continues to grow and help produce globally competitive nurses to help heal the world.

To conduct health-related research and other scholarly activities to add to the body of specialized knowledge and theory in health care education. 6. To foster an academic climate that promotes excellent researches and publications on health; 7. To produce health care providers that practice legal, ethico-moral, social responsibilities/accountabilities to the community people; 8. To generate committed and compassionate health care providers who render caring services to a culturally diverse community; 9. To acknowledge diversity of values and ethics, cultures, and ethnicity of all people; 10. To support the improvement of health programs from local to global arena in discovery, learning, and engagement through community partnership; 11. To promote a positive societal view of professional health care by increasing public awareness and acceptance of health practice; and 12. To promote advocacy for the improvement of health care delivery system through changes in public policy with regard to accessibility, effectiveness, and quality of health care.
