Food Cultures & Societies: Transformation and Entanglements Webinar

Joint webinar hosted by St. Scholastica’s College Manila and Central Mindanao University with coordination of Campus Erasmus Mundus, Inc.

Food and cultures are inseparable. In different parts of the world, food has been a manifestation of both the uniqueness and similarities of various cultures and societies. From the cultivation of ingredients, preparation of dishes, partaking of meals to handing down family recipes, the significance of food has been interwoven in the socio-economic and cultural fabrics of local and international scales.

Heritage also plays a crucial role in the safeguarding of knowledge systems, social practices and rituals that are embedded in the gastronomic landscape of communities from farm to table or even streets to gourmet. Societies all over the world are in continuous transformations. Nowadays, the potential for food heritage is also explored in being a driver for both sustainable development and tourism. People in different parts of the world are striving to have more sustainable consumption and production, some have even empowered local communities by supporting rural development through agriculture and local tourism. Traditional cuisines have influenced tourist destinations and the branding of localities which translate to the development of local economies.
