Women’s Month celebration highlights women’s empowerment

As part of the journey towards a more gender-responsive community, the University culminated the National Women’s Month celebration with a talk entitled “CMU: A Catalyst for Gender Fair Society, Empowerment of Women and Other Genders” held at the University Convention Center on March 26, 2024.

Prof. Rosalyn R. Echem, a member of the National GAD Resource Pool of the Philippine Commission on Women and a faculty from Western Mindanao State University was invited as the resource speaker.

Prof. Echem emphasized the role of the university in gender mainstreaming efforts. She challenged the university to take steps against gender disparities, especially in education. She noted that there are differences in the number of male and female students enrolling in and graduating from the different degree programs in the university itself.

“As an academic institution, you have to do something about it,” Prof. Echem urged.

Prof. Echem also listed the different ways the university can address these issues including empowering student leaders in creating programs that will serve as a safe space for their fellow students.

A highlight of the activity was the open forum where faculty and staff participated in a deeper discussion of various gender issues in the university.

Meanwhile, University Center for Gender and Development (UCGAD) Director Dr. Hazel Marie Boloron reiterated in her speech the importance of celebrating Women’s Month.

“This activity allows us, provides us an avenue or somehow a spotlight to honor women’s achievements,” Dr. Boloron said.

Further, University President Dr. Rolito G. Eballe urged everyone in his message to acknowledge women’s contribution wherever they may be.

“Let us wholeheartedly acknowledge the remarkable achievements and invaluable contribution of women in our society and women even in our respective families,” Dr. Eballe said.

Dr. Eballe also added that women play important roles in the success of the university.

“It is undeniable that CMU stands where it does today significantly due to the unwavering dedication and passion exhibited by our women colleagues who serve as the very backbone or part of the backbone of the institutional process and henceforth, institutional success,” Dr. Eballe added.

Aside from the lecture, the month-long celebration included an infographic-making contest, poster-making contest, photo essay contest, selfie and groufie contest, and the Search of the Ulirang Ina. Self-care services such as manicures, pedicure, eyebrow threading, and haircuts were also offered for free through a raffle draw at the UCGAD Hall. [Johnica Chantal G. Montero]
